To drive and rent a car in New Zealand, you need a valid driver’s license from your country of residence, or an international driving permit (IDP) if your license is not in English.

In New Zealand, cars drive on the left and speed is measured in kilometers per hour.

The speed limit on freeways is 100 km/h, on rural roads usually 70/80 km/h, and in urban areas generally 60 km/h, reducing to 40 km/h near schools and 30 km/h in city centers.

There are three toll roads in New Zealand: the Northern Gateway north of Auckland, the Tauranga Eastern Link, and the Takitimu Drive. The tolls range from $1.80 to $2.30 for cars. You can pay charges via a Pay&Go system, for which you will need to set up an account online in advance of your trip.

Outside of the main cities, there are few freeways in New Zealand. Roads are often hilly, narrow and winding, meaning journeys can take longer than you would predict from looking at a map.

Parking in central Auckland is Pay and Display between 8am and 10pm daily, with the first 10 minutes free, and no time limits. Outside of downtown, paid parking is enforced Monday to Saturday between 8am and 10pm unless otherwise stated. There are also a number of off-street parking options if you are looking to stay for longer.

Discover Auckland and the surrounding area by car

The lush surroundings of Auckland make for a variety of exciting day trip opportunities. Matakana, under an hour from Auckland, boasts stunning river valleys, beaches and vineyards to explore. Slightly closer to the city, the scenic countryside of Puhoi is perfect for hiking or kayaking.

Two hours (including the ferry crossing) away in the Hauraki Gulf, Waiheke Island is made for exploring. Treks, wine tasting, bush walking and zip-lining - there is more than enough to fill your day before heading back to Auckland for supper.

Traveling further afield in your rental car you can visit Hunua Ranges (30 miles away), with waterfalls and incredible vistas, or Matamata (100 miles), home to the Hobbiton film set from Lord of the Rings.

On top of an Auckland volcanic cone, the One Tree Hill pa or fortress marks the grave of prominent New Zealand figure John Logan Campbell. He requested the One Tree memorial be built to commemorate the M?ori people who once lived here. Climb 180 meter to the top to enjoy 360-degree views of Auckland and the surrounding area. Learn more about the history of the site at the Cornwall Park Information Centre, and leave time to explore Cornwall Park itself.
